Vacances d’hiver Recap #3: Bern, Switzerland

Hello and welcome back to the third of six vacances d’hiver vacation updates! My travel companion (who will, from here on out, be referred to as MTC J) and I spent the vacances d’hiver travelling to Besançon (FR), Bâle (SWZ), Bern (SWZ), Geneva (SWZ), Annecy (FR), and Lyon, specifically Thurins (FR). Without further ado, let’s get started with part three of the recap, featuring the wonderful city of Bern, Switzerland!

Lundi 12 fevrier 2018

MTC and I arrived in Bern around 14h00 after our 1: 40-minute drive from Bâle to Bern. We checked into our Airbnb and spent some time relaxing/watching a couple episodes of Stranger Things 2. Around 17h30, we decided to brave the outside world and set out to explore a bit of Bern.

After walking around for an hour and a half or so, we faced the hard reality that when people say that Switzerland is an expensive country, they are not joking. To give you some point of reference, we walked past a lot of Italian restaurants whose margarita pizza, the most basic of all the pizzas, was 19,00-22,00 CHF. We looked at the menus for dozens of restaurants before finally settling in on a Rosti restaurant with reasonable prices, where I enjoyed a beer and a ham & mushroom rosti (aka, a gratin-style potato dish that is a Switzerland specialty).

After dinner, we walked back to our Airbnb and called it a night.

Mardi 13 fevrier 2018

MTC and I were up and ready to hit the city by 9h15 on Tuesday (which was pretty impressive given our tendency to not be up and at ‘em until after 10h00.

Instead of keeping to a very specific plan for sightseeing, we decided to hit up the tourism office, grab a map, and head out on the town.

MTC and I walked around a TON—we were out exploring the city for around 7 hours.

On the list of “places visited” includes the following: many churches (though just the outsides of many given Switzerland’s tendency to close their churches), the Palais Federal (though due to me forgetting my passport, we had to abort mission for our free guided tour), lots of random little statues that are scattered amidst the streets of Bern, the horloge, and the Einstein House!

After a very long day of walking and site seeing, we headed back toward our Airbnb around 16h30 and made a quick stop at the supermarket to grab some food to eat for dinner. We finished “Stranger Things 2” (SO GOOD) and moved onto our next series, “La Casa de Papel” (or the English title, “Money Heist”). After eating & cooking dinner, MTC and I talked for a bit before starting the next episode of “La Casa de Papel”, but I promptly fell asleep less than halfway through the second episode.

Mercredi 14 fevrier 2018

On Wednesday morning, MTC and I did what we did nearly every morning of this trip: we work up, got ready, ate breakfast, and packed up the car. We checked out of our Airbnb and were on our way to our next vacances d’hiver travel destination: Geneva, Switzerland!

Thanks for reading my third vacances d’hiver recap post and check back soon for more.

Until next time,

Michaela
