Grad School Goals & Life Updates – October

Wow, it’s already October!! The first 5 weeks of grad school have just flown by – it’s amazing how quickly time is passing. That being said, it’s time to share my progress on my September goals and make some new ones for October. Since I’m posting far less than I was when I was in France (for obvious reasons), I’m going to include a life update at the bottom of each post for my family and friends who, despite me living a much less exciting life than I did six months ago, still follow and read the blog (thanks, y’all ❤ )

September Goals: Recap

(1) Self-Care

  • At least 4 workouts/week (log 30 running miles this month) [X – I logged exactly 30!]
  • At least 10,000 steps a day [X – My daily average was 9,800, so I’m calling that a win]
  • Read one book for fun this month [X – I read The Barbarian Way and Half the Sky]
  • Explore churches/find a church home [X – Woohoo!]

(2) Academia

  • Settle into a solid daily/weekly routine {I’m working on it, but I’m still not there yet}
  • Practice French on Rosetta Stone at least 1x/week {Absolutley failed at this, haha}
  • Stay on top of readings and notes [X – Somehow, I’ve miraculously done this]

(3) Finances/Misc

  • Balance my budget 1x/week [X – Easy Sunday study breaks]
  • Pay loans and rent on time [X – Probably the easiest goal I set up for myself]

October Goals

(1) Self-Care

  • Run 4 treadmill 5ks with 10:00/mile pace
    • After taking so long off running after my half-marathon in 2015 and running very inconsistently since then, last month’s 30 miles were a painfully slow struggle. While my endurance/stamina definitely improved, I’m still looking to get a bit faster. I know 10:00/mile pace isn’t fast for some, but it’s about 3:00 minutes faster than where I started in September…we’re all about baby steps over here 🙂
  • No phone between 10pm and 7am
    • This one is going to be a struggle, but I know I can do it because I did something similar for Lent this year (no phone from 8pm-8am) with great success. I use my phone in the morning to listen to a daily prayer podcast (the 5 Word Prayer Daily – highly recommend!) and for a meditation, but it’s counterproductive when I’m scrolling social media directly before/after I do these things to quiet my soul. We’ll see how this one goes
  • Read one book for fun
    • If anyone has any recommendations for this one, please let me know in the comments down below 🙂
  • Don’t skip church or Bible study this month
    • Trying to get ahead on homework instead of spending time with Jesus just ain’t worth it

(2) Academia

  • Settle into a solid daily/weekly routine
  • Stay on top of my readings and notes
  • Get one thing done for each of my final projects each week
    • As a social work student, tests are pretty much non-existent to me (#blessed because who likes big exams??), but I’ve got big final projects and papers to create and write instead. For this goal, I’m going to write down everything that needs to get done for the semester and work backward to figure out how much/what I should be each week. I’d much rather do a little bit every week than be stressing out like crazy come Thanksgiving break

(3) Finances/Misc

  • Balance my budget 1x/week
  • Pay loans and rent on time
  • Only pay in cash
    • I’m not a huge fan of using my debit or credit cards because it makes me feel that I’ve got endless amounts of money when I absolutely do not. I already only pay in cash for groceries (my biggest expense sans rent) and I only withdraw cash once a month, so hopefully, this will push me to (a) spend the money I have on groceries only and (b) not buy anything that isn’t absolutely necessary (chai tea lattes from Expresso Royale…I will miss you).

Life Updates

1.) The biggest (and most exciting!) thing that’s happened this month – I’ve purchased my Christmas plane tickets for France!!! I am SO excited!! It will be three glorious weeks of spending time with L and his family and friends, my dear Clamecy colleagues and students, and all the friends I made along the way. Plus, a second Christmas season spent in France…what’s not to adore about that??

2.) Even though the semester feels like it just started, we are already having advising for the second semester. I won’t disclose too many details yet, but I might (fingers crossed) have the opportunity to study abroad for two weeks in a very exciting place! I won’t give it away yet (just in case it doesn’t come into fruition), but I will say that this place in on my bucket list. If you want to take a guess, you can click on this link (https://goo.gl/maps/CWYsmJVGiWK2), browse through my list, and make a guess in the comments 🙂

Here are a few photos from this past month.

Until next time,
